The easiest way to ensure you have the proper bulk is to get a cheap potato masher. Make a mark on the handle at 3 inches up from the masher part, and another mark at 4 inches up. Stop your main wash during the agitating part of the cycle and press the potato masher down on your laundry until you feel some resistance. If your water level is between the marks, you're perfect. If it's under the 3 inch mark, you'll need to bulk a little less, and if it's over the 4 inch mark you'll need to add some more bulk.
